How to Dry Out a Crawl Space

Drying out a crawl space is a five-step process: remove the water, clear wet materials, move air and dehumidify, fix the source, and seal the soil. The right first step depends on whether you are dealing with a flood, a leak, or year-round damp.

Almost every guide gives one generic checklist, but the correct first move is different depending on why the crawl space is wet. Find your situation, then follow the steps below.

If you are not sure which one you have, start by reading standing water in your crawl space for a flood or storm event, or chronic crawl space humidity if the air is damp but you cannot find standing water.

Step 1

Remove the standing water

You cannot dry air that is sitting above a puddle. Water comes out first, before fans or a dehumidifier will do anything useful.

For deeper water, pump first with a submersible or portable sump pump, discharging well away from the foundation.

Use a wet/dry vacuum for the last inch or two and for corners the pump cannot reach.

Direct the discharge downhill and away from the house, not back toward the foundation wall.

If water keeps returning, a permanent sump pump and drainage line is usually the real fix, not repeated bailing.

Do not enter standing water in a crawl space that also has electrical wiring, junction boxes, or a nearby panel until power to that area is off. Treat flood water as contaminated — wear gloves, boots, and eye protection, and keep children and pets out. Sewage or several inches of standing water is a professional job.

Step 2

Clear out wet materials

Wet materials hold moisture and slow the whole space down. Removing them shortens drying time and prevents odor and mold from setting in.

Pull out anything the water soaked: fallen or saturated fiberglass insulation, cardboard, stored items, loose debris, and old torn vapor barrier. Fiberglass that has been wet rarely dries back to useful condition and usually needs replacing. Bag debris and get it out of the crawl space so it is not sitting on the soil while you dry. Step 3

Dry the air and surfaces

Now move air across the wet wood and pull moisture out of the space. Airflow alone evaporates water into the air; a dehumidifier is what actually removes it.

Place air movers or fans low and angled along the framing so air sweeps across joists and the subfloor.

Run a dehumidifier sized for the space, draining continuously to the sump or outside so you are not emptying a tank.

Close the foundation vents while drying — open vents just pull humid outdoor air back in and fight the dehumidifier.

Keep everything running continuously, not in short bursts, until readings confirm the space is dry.

How to know it's actually dry

This is the step most guides skip. Drying is not finished when surfaces look dry — it is finished when readings say so. Guessing is how a space gets sealed up while it is still wet, which traps moisture and grows mold.

Mold can begin growing on damp wood and materials. This is why speed matters after a flood.

Step 4

Fix the water source

Drying removes today's water. Unless the source is fixed, the space will simply get wet again. Match the fix to where the water is coming from.

When rain is pooling against the house from outside, the real fix is above ground and outside the foundation wall — grading, downspouts, and surface water. Step 5

Keep it dry with a vapor barrier

A dry crawl space only stays dry if the soil is sealed. Bare dirt releases moisture into the space continuously, even when there is no visible water.

Once the space is dry and the source is handled, cover the soil with a vapor barrier — thick plastic sheeting across the ground and up the walls, with seams overlapped and sealed. For a space with ongoing humidity, odor, or open vents, sealing the soil is often the first move toward full crawl space encapsulation, which closes the vents and adds humidity control. If water keeps arriving, pair the barrier with a sump pump so the next storm drains instead of pooling.

Drying it out once vs. keeping it dry

These are two different jobs, and blending them is how a crawl space ends up dried and re-flooded on repeat.

Drying it out (temporary)

Pumps, wet/dry vacuums, air movers, and a dehumidifier remove the water that is there right now. This is emergency work. It is worth doing quickly, but on its own it changes nothing about why the space got wet. Rent the equipment, dry the space, verify the readings — then stop.

Keeping it dry (permanent)

Grading, drainage, a sump pump, a sealed vapor barrier, vent sealing, and humidity control are what stop the water from coming back. This is where the money should go if the space floods every season, because drying a space five times costs more than fixing the source once.

When DIY drying is the wrong answer: standing water that keeps returning, sewage or contaminated flood water, soft or crumbling wood, widespread mold-like growth, or access too tight to work safely. How long does it take to dry out a crawl space?

With water removed and equipment running continuously, surfaces often dry over several days, and heavily saturated wood can take a week or two. The timeline depends on how wet the space was, how much airflow and dehumidification you have, and whether the water source has been stopped. If the source is not fixed, the space will not stay dry no matter how long you run the fans.

Will a dehumidifier alone dry out a crawl space?

Not by itself. A dehumidifier is the finishing step that pulls moisture out of the air and wood, but it cannot keep up with standing water or a source that keeps adding moisture. Remove standing water and wet materials first, then let the dehumidifier and air movers bring humidity down.

Is water in a crawl space normal after heavy rain?

A little transient dampness can happen, but visible standing water that lasts more than 24 to 48 hours is not normal and points to a drainage, grading, or moisture-control problem. Water that keeps returning after each storm usually means outside water is reaching the foundation or entering through the walls.

Can I dry out my crawl space myself?

Small, clean, shallow moisture problems are often manageable for a careful homeowner with a wet/dry vacuum, fans, and a dehumidifier. Flooding, sewage or contaminated water, widespread mold-like growth, soft or damaged wood, or tight unsafe access are situations to leave to professionals.

How do I know when the crawl space is actually dry?

Use a reading, not a guess. A moisture meter on the joists should read below about 15 to 16 percent, and relative humidity in the space should settle under roughly 55 to 60 percent. Surfaces should feel dry, the musty smell should fade, and no condensation should return overnight.

Does drying out a crawl space treat or prevent dry rot?

Drying stops rot advancing, because decay fungi need wood above roughly 20 percent moisture to stay active. It does not rebuild wood that has already gone soft, and it is only one step of the treatment.
