Should You Close Crawl Space Vents in Winter?

For most vented crawl spaces, yes — once nights drop toward 40°F, close the vents to keep freezing air off the pipes and ducts. Do it only if the soil is covered and dry, never if a gas appliance down there needs that air, and keep a sealed crawl space closed all year. The bigger moisture risk in humid climates is open vents in summer.

The short version

Winter vent closing is about pipes. The moisture question is really a summer one.

Most advice treats this as a humidity debate. In winter, it mostly is not.

Foundation vents were designed to let outside air carry moisture out from under the house. That works when the outside air is drier than the crawl space. Cold winter air holds very little water, so in winter an open vent does not bring much moisture in — what it brings in is cold. Cold air blowing across water pipes and ductwork is how pipes freeze and floors above feel like ice.

That is why closing vents in winter is mostly a freeze-protection and comfort decision, and why it is usually the right one for a vented crawl space with plumbing. Research by the University of Illinois Building Research Council found that uninsulated pipes in unheated areas begin freezing when the outdoor temperature drops to about 20°F — and a pipe near an open vent sees the wind as well as the temperature.

The season where vents cause moisture problems is summer. In humid climates like North Carolina, warm outdoor air carries more water than the cooler crawl space can hold, and it condenses on ducts and framing. That is the argument behind sealed crawl spaces, and it is a different decision from closing vents for a cold snap.

Safety first

The one situation where closing vents can be dangerous

If there is a gas or oil furnace, boiler or water heater in the crawl space, find out where it gets its combustion air before closing anything. Older, atmospherically vented appliances often draw that air from the space around them. Closing the vents can starve the burner, which can cause poor combustion and backdrafting of exhaust, including carbon monoxide, into the house.

Sealed-combustion appliances that pipe in outside air directly are not affected. If you are not sure which you have, ask an HVAC technician before closing the vents, and make sure a working carbon monoxide alarm is installed on each level of the home.

How to close crawl space vents for winter

  1. Look first. From the access door, check for standing water, wet soil, a torn vapour barrier or signs of a plumbing leak. Fix those before closing up.
  2. Use what the vent already has. Many foundation vents have a sliding louver or lever. Close it fully.
  3. For fixed vents, fit removable covers. Insulated vent covers, rigid foam board cut to fit snugly, or magnetic covers on metal vents all work, and all come out again in spring.
  4. Do not glue or spray-foam them shut for a seasonal change. Permanent sealing is a design change with its own requirements.
  5. Close every vent, and the access door. One open vent on the windward side can freeze the pipes nearest it.
  6. Put a hygrometer down there and check it after a week or two.

Automatic temperature vents are the no-effort version. A bi-metal coil in the vent closes it fully at about 40°F and opens it fully at about 70°F, with no electricity. They are inexpensive to retrofit into standard openings. If you already have them, check each one actually moves; a stuck vent is an open vent.

Closing vents is one layer of freeze protection, not the whole thing. On pipes that have frozen before, add foam pipe insulation, seal gaps around pipe and wire penetrations at the rim joist, and in a hard freeze let a faucet drip on the most exposed line.

The code

Closing vents is allowed. Sealing them permanently is a different decision.

The International Residential Code sets how much ventilation a vented crawl space needs — about 1 square foot of net vent area per 150 square feet of floor, or 1 per 1,500 when the ground is covered with an approved vapour retarder — and it specifically says the installation of operable louvers shall not be prohibited. In other words, vents you can open and close are anticipated by the code; the ventilation calculator works out the required area.

Leaving vents permanently sealed is the unvented crawl space path, which the code treats separately: a continuous, sealed Class I vapour retarder over the ground, with seams overlapped and taped, plus a method of keeping the air dry such as a dehumidifier, conditioned supply air or exhaust. North Carolina's residential code has its own closed crawl space provisions. That is what crawl space encapsulation is, and it is a project rather than a seasonal switch.

When to reopen them

For a traditional vented crawl space, reopen the vents in spring once freezing nights are behind you. Then keep an eye on the hygrometer as the weather turns humid. If humidity climbs every summer with the vents open — the common pattern in the Southeast — the crawl space is telling you vents are not drying it, and a sealed crawl space with humidity control is usually the longer-term answer.
