You do not need a contractor to find out whether your crawl space has a moisture problem. A taped plastic square, a cheap hygrometer, and a careful look will tell you which of three problems you likely have — and what each result points to.
Test 1
This is the cheapest, most reliable DIY moisture test, and it is the one building-science references describe. It tells you whether moisture is rising out of the ground.
This mirrors the plastic-sheet method described in ASTM D4263 for checking moisture moving out of a slab or soil. Condensation trapped on the underside means ground moisture is evaporating upward; a dry square after a few damp days is a good sign the soil is not a major source.
Test 2
The plastic sheet finds ground vapor, but it will not tell you how humid the air itself is. For that you want a number.
Place an inexpensive hygrometer in the middle of the crawl space, away from a vent, and let it settle for a few hours. As a general guide, relative humidity above about 60 percent signals a problem worth correcting, and 70 percent or more creates conditions where mold-like growth and wood damage become likely. Take the reading over several days rather than trusting a single measurement, because humidity swings with the weather.
Test 3
Before or alongside the tests, a careful look catches problems a single reading can miss.
Water stains, tide lines, or dark patches on framing and the foundation wall
Soil that stays dark, cool, and damp to the touch even in dry weather
Condensation or beading on ductwork, pipes, and the underside of the subfloor
A musty or earthy smell that also shows up on the first floor above
Fiberglass insulation that is sagging, discolored, or falling down
Rusty nail heads, framing connectors, or duct straps

Limits
These tests tell you a problem is likely. They do not measure how far it has gone or whether the structure is affected.
Stop and get qualified help when you find standing water more than an inch or two deep, sewage or contaminated water, soft or structurally questionable wood, signs of extensive mold-like growth, or any electrical hazard.
