Scale first
EPA's cleanup guidance draws the line at roughly 10 square feet, and knowing which side you are on changes both the method and the cost.

The method
Two of these are routinely skipped, and both of them raise your exposure or waste the work.

Never enter a crawl space with standing water where wiring, junction boxes, or a panel are present until power to that area is off. Treat flood water as contaminated, and leave sewage, deep water, or unstable access to professionals.
What not to do
Most of these are popular because they are easy to sell or easy to do, rather than because they work.

The common thread is that all five treat the growth as the problem. It is the symptom. A crawl space that stays below about 55 to 60 percent relative humidity does not grow mould, whatever you did or did not spray on it — which is why the moisture work is the part worth paying for.

Physical removal does most of the work, which is why scrubbing and HEPA vacuuming matter more than the product you use. Dryness does the rest, since decay and mould growth stall once wood drops below roughly 20 percent moisture. After the wood is clean and dry, a borate treatment on bare timber makes it less hospitable to future growth. Killing growth without removing it and without drying the space reliably leads to it returning.
It is a poor choice on framing. Household bleach is mostly water, and adding water to a crawl space with a moisture problem works against you. It also penetrates porous wood poorly, so it can lift the surface stain while leaving growth within the timber. Detergent and water with thorough scrubbing, followed by HEPA vacuuming and proper drying, is the more effective approach on wood.
Not as a standalone remedy. A fogger disperses a biocide as a mist, which can reduce airborne spores and treat surfaces it reaches, but it does not physically remove the growth or the material it is feeding on, and it changes nothing about the moisture. Used after cleaning and drying it is a finishing touch. Sold as a substitute for removal, it is the most common thing homeowners pay for twice.
The cleaning itself is often a day or two for a typical crawl space. Drying is what sets the real timeline: with equipment running continuously, surfaces dry over several days and heavily saturated framing can take a week or two. Where the moisture source needs correcting first, whether that is drainage, a plumbing repair, or a vapour barrier, that work comes before the clock starts.
Yes, if the conditions that grew it are unchanged, and that is the usual reason people find themselves remediating twice. Removal deals with what is there now; it does nothing about ground vapour, humid air, or water reaching the crawl space. The durable outcome comes from pairing removal with moisture control, holding humidity in the 45 to 55 percent band and keeping wood below about 16 percent.
