When does a crawl space post need replacement instead of re-shimming?
Re-shimming only closes a small gap under a post that is otherwise sound and sitting on a stable footing. Crawlspace post replacement is the better fit when the post itself is rotted, rusted, crushed, split, or undersized, when it is set directly on soil or on loose stacked blocks, or when the footing under it has settled. Replacing the post without correcting the footing usually repeats the problem.
