What size does a crawl space access door have to be?
Under the IRC, an access opening through the floor must be at least 18 by 24 inches, and an opening through the perimeter foundation wall at least 16 by 24 inches. If any part of a through-wall opening is below grade, an areaway of at least 16 by 24 inches is required. Where mechanical equipment such as a furnace or water heater sits in the crawl space, the opening has to be at least 22 by 30 inches and large enough to remove the largest appliance. Local amendments vary, so confirm with your building department before cutting anything.
